But, thanks to all who tried to resolve my dilema - ranging from 'the good, the bad and the ugly' through to 'They're all Javanese et al'.
I've spent big time in Java and apart from a very few exceptions - like at Puncak - I've never been harrased the way I have been in Bali.
So, I ask again. Who are these people? Are they husbands or wives of these delightful Banjar confined people who - almost literally live in the shadow of the gods?
My paradox remains unanswered. But whatever, I think Bali needs a fundamental change in attitude if it is to remain a major tourist atraction. Pestering by traders can be amusing for a while, as can street-side scam merchants and crooked taxi drivers, but for most it becomes a real and unneccesary irritation after a few days.
Get your act together Bali.
Thanks again to all replies.
