Bali is very much a land of balance. Call it Yin-Yang, or what you like. Hence the black & white check outfits for the statues and also village officials. You always need that balance in your life.
Why then should it be surprising that you also have a similar situation within the very nature of the people. If you have experienced bad or evil, it makes it a lot easier to appreciate the other extremes of good, and all the various degrees or graduations in between.
The same applies to cheap and expensive. If we hadn't been ripped off and forced to pay exhorbitant prices for products or services here in Oz, we wouldn't be able to fully appreciate how cheap the same articles are in Bali.
