Well, he who hesitates is not always lost! A new fare just came up today flying Chch to Bali via Sydney or Melbourne on Qantas and Australian (Airlines?), Adult: NZ$1090, Child: NZ$825. You can have one stopover in Australia either going or coming back. Don't think I can do any better than this, as not only have I never been to Australia and this means we can have an almost-'free' stopover there for as long as we want on the way back, but it's also the cheapest airfare I've come across from Chch, PLUS from Chch it has the least number of stopovers. So I'm pretty happy right now! This fare (with taxes included) is $800 or $900 cheaper than the deal we were considering with Air NZ/Garuda via Australia, and the same price (once taxes calculated) as traveling on Malaysia Air.
