Avoid drinking too much pre-flight as you may be denied boarding if you are too intoxicated or even appear drunk. The airline has every right to deny a passenger to board if he/she poses as a risk to safety or to the comfort of fellow travellers on board. I would surely not want to have an unruly passenger next to me for several hours.

Secondly, being drunk during the flight may hinder you being alert and active should there, for example, be an emergency evacuation on taking off or landing. Such things do happen although luckily very seldom. Alcohol and soothing drugs taken together, are to be completely avoided as they are really a dangerous combination, at home as well as on a flight.

Instead, talk to the airline staff and explain that you worry/are scared. Cabin attendants are well aware of this problem and mostly do their utmost to assist. Such attitude is good PR for the airline and I have seen a cabin attendant really taking good care of a passenger who was scared beyond belief before and during a particularly scary landing in thick fog in Canada a few years back.
