I believe they helped me when I flew last year with a very heavy cold - the doctor suggested them, but he did not want me to fly. The pain was still severe though, and I couldn't hear properly for 3 days after. It is the descent that is the worst and I now know that I could have had burst ear drums, so you could say they did work!
