Take as little cash as possible and just use travellers cheques and Visa card etc if you have one for ATM machines. Change the travellers cheques at reputable banks or a Post Office and yes there are safety deposit boxes at the banks although that may prove to be quite expensive. Do not carry too much cash on your person in London - sadly there are muggers and pickpockets about particularly the latter prowling around the underground train network ( Tubes )
