Can't remember a lot about it, except that I loved it. Stayed at Yasa Samudra Bungalows which were then right on the beach - now of course located on Jalan Pantai Kuta.
Ate lots of satay, lobster and spare ribs which were cooked on racks out the front of the restaurants. Also jaffles were very popular.
The streets were unpaved, there were no glass fronted shops and shopping at night was accompanied by the hissing of gas lamps.
