I've discussed Yogya in a few previous posts in some detail. If you search the forum, you'll find some handy info.

Briefly, you don't need to book a package tour. Book a return ticket that leaves Bali early and returns late the next day. Just take an overnight bag/backpack with a change of clothes and a camera and a few toileteries/sunscreen. A return ticket should cost 80-100 dollars.

After arriving at Yogya Airport, catch a bus or taxi to Prambanan Temple complex and spend most of the day there. It's only about 10-15km from the airport. Don't worry about booking a hotel... just show up and you'll get a room. There is a useful list (including prices) at the train platform at Tugu station.

For night activities, you have a wide choice (depending on the day/season)... puppet shows, Indonesian ballet, various concerts/dances. The tourist information building on Malioboro Street has some useful information, but beware of their map... it is NOT to scale. Pubs are hard to find without the help of a local. The food is cheap and fantastic just about everywhere, including the street stalls.

The next day, go to Borobudhur temple. By bus it is very cheap, but it's hard to get accurate information about where to catch it and when it comes. Drivers are easy to find and generally cheaper than in Bali.

After seeing Borobudur, fill in whatever hours you have left as you see fit, then catch the flight back to Bali.

There's heaps more to see and do in Yogya, but if you only want to go overnight, Prambanan and Borobudhur are essentials.

And yes... it is well worth it.
