what you want and what you want to spend. Pesonally I found those in the brochures cheaper to pre-book. Most are $60+ a double in brochures. When you get there many are in US$. But if you want a bit cheaper there are many places. The budget ones in the brochures I think you can beat for value. EG garden view is about $60 a double (estimate only- I may be a bit out. I haven't stayed there this year). You can get a similar room with a better pool, including breakfast for 150.000rp a double (Aquarius Hotel, AP Inn). That's half the price. You can also stay at the same place for 70.000 if you don't want AC. I will never prebook again. I will only take the minimum package and get my own accom.
As you mentioned thjere are different opinions. My first 3 trips I would have said ALWAYS pre-book. Then I found some great places that are not in the brochures. I had only been looking at ones in the brochures, which, as I mentioned, were not cheaper.
