No expert or anything, but can speak from own experience. January is in the 'wet' season, but my better half and I were in Bali early January 2002, and had a couple of rainy days but the rest were lovely and sunny, if somewhat humid. Also many years back I was there late Jan/early Feb and much the same, just a few rainy days. Better half and I are heading over there again this coming January as it happens with the parents. I dont have any experience as to dance classes, so I am not able to remark on that. With a budget of $750 p/w you should be well set, good accomodation is reasonably cheap and almost all hotels have swimming pools. The ocean at Kuta can be quite rough and also a bit er rubbish affected, so with the currents and all, caution should be exercised, but then thats the same at a lot of beaches, there's always the chance of undercurrents etc. As to Bali being safe, once again I would say it's like anywhere else, there are risks, but with a bit of caution these are minimal, Bali is a fabulous place for a holiday, and you'll have a great time, I'm sure.
