Just got back today from Bali and you get a better exchange rate if you cash in crisp, new $100 U.S. bills vs. smaller denominations and vs. traveler's checks. The big surprise was that many money changers, major hotels and even banks wouldn't take money printed before the year 1999! Also wouldn't take old, wrinkled money. Apparently, there was a rash of counterfeit money before 1999, which is why many are wary about accepting bills printed before then.
By the way, this was our 3rd trip back to Bali and again, used the incredible guide services of Wayan Sueta (www.hiddenbali.com) and we will never use anyone else! Also highly recommend the enchanting and magical hotel in Ubud called Alam Indah. Stay in the Gardenia Suite! Not sure of their website, but do a search on this forum or on the internet.
