If you take travellers cheques from Australia they will be in Australian dollars - not US dollars even if Amex TC .
When you cash those cheques you must have your passport with you. Some kodak/wartel will allow a photo copy of your passport. It is a pain to have to produce this each time and then return the p/port to the safe box.
Easiest is to take Aussie dollars in $100 notes - all new. Put say $200 into envelopes. Number the envelopes 2 of 10 or however much you take. Then put all into the safe deposit box at the hotel. Each time you need money just take the envelope.
You know how much is left and no one else can see how much you have.
Btw - if you travel around the island you will need your passport to check into hotels. Always carry a photo copy of the passport. Most hotels are happy with that as your passport number can be linked up with your visa number.
