We have stayed on Lembongan many times, and it is one of our favourite places to kick back for a while. Surf can be excellent! Hardly any shops, no cars...etc
If you surf, you will probably want to stay forever, if not then 3or4 days is enough. After that time, you would be totally comatosed.

Best beaches for swimming, snorkelling and sunbathing are Mushroom beach, and the beach where Villa Wayan is. The beach where the Public Boat lands is not that nice.

You have a few choices to make on how to get to the island:
1. Catch a public boat that leaves from sanur beach. very cheap...very crowded...very interesting. The boats leave early in the morning so check out location the day before and prebook your tickets if you can. These boats land on the main beach at Jungutbatu. To the left of landing there is an abundance of cheap to very cheap losmen and plenty of places to eat. To the right and on the headland you will find more upmarket places.
2. Get a package deal with Bali Hai, Sail Sensations, or Island Princess. These are modern larger boats that will drop you off at your hotel. Some of the boats are luxurious catamarans, others daytripper boats.

How much you wish to spend will determine what you choose.

Some places you could conside...look them up on the net to get an idea.

Hai Tide Huts - expensive but great...especially when the day trippers go home. Great beach.
Coconuts - fantastic rooms and views, but if you are up the top of the stairs..very physically demanding!!! Ask for a room as close to the pool as they have!!! Nice small private cove and top snorkelling. 2 pools
Lembongan Resort - absolute luxury (we hope...staying there for a few days in July)! Great Beach Pool
Villa Wyan - many unusual choices of accommodation and fairly well priced...very friendly but no pool. OK Beach but a bit hard to swim at.

The above places are away from the main cheaper accommodation so much quieter.
If you want to party on with the surf crew hang around the Junkutbatu area.
Main Ski is probably the pick in that area, but there are heaps of options.

Have a great time.
