I honeymooned in Phuket in 2001 and stayed at Merlin Beach resort which was beautiful but we often had to get taxis up the hill as the free buses were too infrequent. The Patong Merlin is fairly old but was being renovated at the time we were there. Patong Merlin is in a good location right across from the beach.
We did heaps of tours and loved the cheap Thai food available in Patong. We went on tours to Phi Phi, James bond Island, Elephant trekking which were all good.
Personally I found the night life ie. the endless stream of girlie bars, to be a bit in my face. There were not many places for couples to go. One night we went to a theme park thing called FantaSea which I would recommend. There was also a transvestite caberet which was good for a laugh and the 'girls' were stunners.
If you are stopping in Bangkok don't miss the Royal Palace and a day tour up to Ayuthaya.
