The good thing about Sanur Sam is that it was the original Resort area of Bali. It's actually a village and stretches about 4 - 6 kilometres I think (my guess). Between the Sanur Beach Hotel at the southern end of Sanur and the Grand Bali Beach at the Northern end there are a zillion shops, cafes and restaurants... There are also a couple of good sized markets. Prior to October 12, these were spread out fairly evenly between those two places. Like the rest of Bali, though, Sanur has been hard hit by October 12 and the energy of the place has suffered. When we were last there, Street Hawkers had been outlawed. In Kuta this was a welcome relief because they were incessant and aggressive. In Sanur, though, I felt the hawkers added an edge of vitality and entertainment to the nightlife and the place was considerably quieter without them.
One of the great things about Bali is the fact that you have an incredible choice of things to do, but there is no pressure to participate in organised tours and activities - you do stuff when it suits you. $40-$45 (20 - 25 pound?) gets you a Driver and vehicle for 8 hours and he'll take you to some amazing places! I think the thing to do when selecting your choice of accommodation is to settle on a place that offers you options to enjoy all that Bali has. The Griya Santrian is a nice property and has a website so go take a look as it may be more in line with what you are looking for. Whatever choices you make, I'm sure you'll have a great time. Cheers - kevin
