Hi Sam, we were in Sanur back in July and the beach works were going on at the time. Sanur beach has no surf, lots of white sand and is tidal. We prefered to swim across at Seminyak or Kuta as we thought the beaches were nicer - big sandy beaches and good surf.
Mind you Sanur is just lovely to walk along in the evening with the moon shining off the water and nice cafes etc (very romantic and not as frantic as Kuta).
I think it depends on what you are looking for in a holiday. As we live in Aust we didn't put beaches as a high priority (could stay home and do that)so it didn't make a big difference to us. If you are looking for a sun and surf holiday I would say go to Seminyak or Kuta way. Maybe someone else could recommend a resort.
By the way - what is your age group? as this will help in choosing a resort.
