Things do change. A traumatic event like this one causes a sudden shift doesn't it? People who were in Bali during the sixties and seventies tell me how different it is today. Society is not static it evolves in an endless dance shaped by good and bad events.
At the time of the confrontassi and Sukarno's overthrow, culminating in the slaughter of some generals and thousands of communists and so called communists, killed to settle old scores (early sixties not sure exact year) Bali was DEFINITELY not immune. It must have caused a shift in atmosphere at least as big as this. I'd guess bigger. Some of the BTF historians can explain this time better than me.
My point is that Bali won't be the same but we are still in the mourning period for the Bali we knew. Bali will move on and so will we. Just because it will emerge different does not mean it is lost or spoilt.
Indonesia is volatile beneath the surface, but it always was. We are just more aware of it now.
