Another advantage of digital is not paying for pictures that are no good. As for fiddling with downloads heavy batteries etc. I really don't see the problem. Do you homework correctly and you can get excellent results from digital which is the equivelant of any film camera. There is also no need to save in email sized images. Get a camera that saves in both sizes or simply convert if you want to send them.
There are now plenty of devices which are really cheap for storing images. I have one that fits in my top pocket and holds 10,000 pics much better than having rolls and rolls of film.
