QF 29 from SYD to DPS only operates twice a week in AUG/SEP. Your best bet is to catch QF3 on a Sunday morning with a 1:20 connection in SYD to QF29. You go through passport contol and all that in MEL so you shouldnt have a problem if the flight is on time. On the way back QF30 departs on Saturday night and arrives in SYD with 1:50 before connection with QF2. Once again, no need to clear customs until MEL.
The other option is coming back though PER. This is the way QF sent us when the direct DPS-MEL flight we were booked on was cancelled. Managed to get them to book us on the QF30 to SYD the next day with no penalty.
