The news that Garuda has now dumped Adelaide as a departure/return point comes as a bitter blow. I'm not sure how many adelaideans filled the various Garuda and Qantas flights but it must have been more than enough to substantiate the flights. Garuda, alone, used to offer 4 flights a week out of Adelaide, which was dropped back to 3 at some stage during 2002. Now there are none and although the airline says it will review the position (mar 2003?)it may come too late as people gradually take Bali off their shopping lists in favour of other, less expensive and less inconvenient destinations. The news for existing paid bookings is not so bad as I believe that, under certain conditions, Garuda has agreed to cover the cost of the domestic link. But for would-be travellers the announcement comes as a costly body blow and it could now add $800 - $1000+ to holiday costs of a family of 4. Beyond the cost implications, with one less domestic airline and less frequency of connecting flights to Melbourne, there are no guarantees that there will even be adequate same-day connections available. In the context of October 12, all of this pales by comparison, but no matter which way you look at things, it's going to be a long road back for Bali. Sadly.
