ZAR Currency

I've read from another forum that it is better to exhange your local currency at Bali. I've got 3 questions regarding this:
1. I want to confirm: Can I exchange South African Rand directly in Bali?
2. Should I maybe rather exchange ZAR to US$ or A$ or pounds and take that with instead of taking ZAR?
3. Should I rather take travellers cheques with than cash?
