I first stayed at Troppo Zone in 1992 and had the best two weeks of my life.
They had heaps of friendly staff dressed in brightly coloured T.Z. shirts, an Aussie Chef, A fleet of shiny T.Z. buses out the front for all the pubcrawls, tours etc, you were given a T.Z. dogtag which allowed you free entry into most of the Nightclubs, it was THE place to party after dark and it seemed that everyone who went to Bali stayed there.
Returned there in 1999 and couldn't believe it was the same place.
When we were first picked up at the Airport, I didn't believe the driver was actually from Troppo, as he wasn't wearing a Troppo uniform and was driving a run-down, dented Bemo.
When we got there, we found that the staff had been reduced to a bare minimum, the gardens were dying or mostly dead (most of the gardens near the bar had been concreted over) our pool was greenish, the room stank to high heaven (I mean REALLY bad)and had loose/missing floor tiles throughout, and both wardrobe doors fell off the first time we opened them!
We were determined to overlook this and enjoy our holiday, but halfway through the night while trying to sleep on the extremely lumpy mattress (as well as gagging on the sewerage smell coming from behind the closed bathroom door) we were woken by yelling and screaming and went outside to witness a Police drug-bust at the room just across from us.
Next day we left, and its a shame, as I had so many good memories of the first time I had spent there, but couldn't believe how run-down it had become in such a short time.
I'm glad you had a great time Cath, but sadly Troppo Zone's best days are far behind them.
