We took our 8 month old to Bali last year for 3 weeks, and for the first few days did not have use of a cot. We just asked for a spare mattress and put it on the floor of the room for him.
I know it's not the same as a cot - I know how much a 1 year old can move around when they are sleeping, but it's not far to fall and much better than in bed with you.
