may have been grown in a wet area of the land and sold on the side of the road. Water melons are like eggs - they absorb inwards from the outside. Read that as you may.
The hotels and restaurants usually do not buy from the local vendor unless they know exactly where and how they are grown and have a contract. A lot of melons are imported from Java plantations.
I would probably trust melons etc in most hotels and restaurants. As the proprietors do not want a wave of Bali Belly!!
Just don't go overboard on the fresh fruit as the diet change will also give you a day of thinking - But hey you will be sqeaky clean by the next day.
Fruit grown above the ground (mangoes etc) are ok.
The taste will get you in - so rich and beautiful. One large papaya with ruby red flesh lasted the two us 4 days. Think it weighed a kilo!!
