Just wanted to share my experience with other forum readers about my trip to the Dieng Plateau in Central Java recently. I first discovered the Dieng Plateau from the Latitudes magazine, which featured an article on children who live in the Dieng Plateau that have "mysteriously matted hair". As I read this article, I became intrigued, this place, Dieng sounded mystical, with landscapes that according to the article, are some of the most stunning in Indonesia. That did it for me, I just had to go. I arrived at the Dieng Plateau at around 9am (early morning is the best time, as the mist rolls in over the mountains by noon). The drive from Yogyakarta takes about 3.5 to 4 hours, going through the city of Wonosobo. The drive, especially once you get into the mountain region is spectacular. I was fortunate enough to have perfect weather and perfect visibility of the surrounding mountains. The landscape of Dieng Plateau has been compared to Peru and Tibet, so for any forum readers who have been to either one of these places and enjoyed it, then a visit to Dieng is a must. I have seen some beautiful sights in Bali, but for me personally, nothing I have seen in Bali comes close to what I saw at the Dieng Plateau and the surrounding area. The air is cool and so fresh. There are 5 ancient Hindu temples right in the middle of the village, which is situated inside a dormant crater or caldera (not sure if it means the same thing). I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to visit central Java, as it is not heavily promoted, therefore, not over touristed. I am going to get my photos from the Dieng developed over the weekend. If anyone is interested in making the trip up and wants to see photos, you can contact me via e-mail at: marsalinebristol@yahoo.com, and I will e-mail you some pics.
