We're also from the US and go to Bali at least yearly (2X in 2001). We've stayed in Kuta for the most part (party central if you're into that), but as we get older we find we enjoy Sanur and the slower pace more. Last 2 times we've stayed at the Besakih in Sanur-do an archive check to see comments. Sanur is more laid back, beaches are nice, prices agreeable. Go to Bali and enjoy all the sights, sounds, and lovely Balinese people. Also recommend a trip to Ubud and surroundings. Tons of info in archives.
