Hi, my husband and I spent 2 glorious weeks in Bali in March 2001 for our honeymoon. We loved it. However, since you haven't been to a 3rd world country before, I don't know if you will like it that much as your first trip abroad. We had been to Carribbean,Fiji,Mexico so were used to the 3rd world environment and found the Balinese very nice and charming (except for the really annoying hawkers). Also, you need to spend at least 10 days there, the flight from the Midwest will keep you laying kind of low for at least 2 days after you get there. We stayed in expensive places but you can definitely stay at very nice places for less than $80/night -- and we had great dinners for 2 w/drinks for less than $20-25 (for the both of us). If you can keep an open mind, you would enjoy Bali -- but it is very different from Hawaii etc.
