The constant tidal chages coupled with the surf causes the rip...all of that water rushing to shore from wave action must eventually return...so it cuts "channels" in in the sand bottom. These "channels are like funnels, or small rivers in the ocean where water moves fast on its return back from shore. Typicaly, you will find the rips in the areas between where the waves are breaking. If there is surf and you are less than a strong swimmer, exercise extreme caution.
