maybe you could consider getting a driver/guide before you leave you could call from home and get a comfort level with a driver - then you will have a "friend" in Bali. your driver could meet you at the airport-you'll feel more secure knowing someone is waiting ofr you and expecting you. just in bali last month, felt fine & safe, but I am a chinese american, and so look somewhat indonesian. I had a driver that was very friendly and spoke good english. email me if you want his name & number (i don't have it here right now.)
