If you are from England take stirling pounds, they are readily changeable. Or US$ are equally good. Take about $200-400 US cash or equiv in pounds per week for your day to day needs, you can pay big bills like hotels with credit cards. Travellers cheques are safe I suppose, but you pay extra. I would suggest carry some cash securely with you if you can, use the hotel mini safes, or put an alarm in your suitcase for peace of mind.
Now what has the US $ got to do with Bali? Answer: it is the defacto currency of the tourism business, and all the medium and upper price hotels quote their rates in US$. Therefore if the rupiah fluctuates they are protected. Where you can lose out is when the bill is presented it will be in US$, if you want to pay in Rupiah, they may convert the bill at a somewhat unfavourable rate. This can also affect thereal cost of the meals and sundries you use in the hotel. Another tip is, do not accept travel agents offers of transfers paid for in advance. There is plenty of transport available from the airport, and most hotels will pick you up for free on request.
Please don't be put off by all this, it is not fundamental regarding a decision to visit Bali, Regards, John
