Besakih is still good value. They have taken all the small bungalows out from the left hand front and replaced with two storey brick bungalows with satelite tele and phones video access. The have a huge new pool (sorry I broke the slide with my sister in 1990) they never replaced it. the Restaurant is larger and there is a walk bridge over the two swimming pools and a spa next to them. They have their own massage girls paid by the hotel now and they are all lovely ladies.

Just a short walk along the beach to the north you will find so many changes. Years ago you would have remembered Norms Bar. (gone)

Mangos replace that and now even better is Bonsai(coldest beer and great breakfast and any meal I could rave on forever)

The water sports are there as well (para sailing and jet ski and snorkling rentals)

Great surfing over the breakers at the back of the reef. Many people years ago used to go to the south for surfing but it was right in front of us all the time.

The children you met are all 18 year olds. Its amazing, I go every year and mum and dad every 6 months. The kids selling are still friendly and always have huge smiles.

I think Besakih is most central to everything.

Anyway there isnt anything stopping you while you are there to jump in to any hotel pool a pretend you are staying there.

The Hyatt for instance. Just for a laugh. My son and I jumped in and pretended we belonged there for 15minutes. Collected our gear and walk home.
