Was at both places march 1998.
I stayed at the beautiful Kata Beach on Phuket. However other places
on the island were not so nice. Lots of traffic, road construction etc. Prices reasonable.
I would suggest Krabi and nearby beach. Very beautiful and cheap.
Like most though I was captivated by Bali. (Ubud and points north)There is so much more variety there. The people were as friendly as you will find anywhere. The food is great. The hotels lovely. And prices were unbelievably cheap. Certainly my preference.
