When changing money just stay calm !!!
I had read a lot about money changers prior to going as well, so I was not sure what to expect, but although 3 out of 5 times they tried to "cheat" me, I found that by counting the money & when it was short I would just smile and look at the money changer - I soon received the full amount.
The advice about ATM card is a good one too, as you get a good rate at ATMs (just be carefull which bank you are with back home as some charge high rates per withdrawl - I found Citybank very good) - but it is good not to put all your eggs in one basket.
In short - don't worry too much, stay calm and just smile - that will make them think you have been there & done all this before and in return they will smile and give you the full amount.
